East Coast Malaysia
An ode to the East Coast states of Kelantan, Pahang, and Terengganu, this design draws inspiration from Kelantan’s traditional rebana ubi and Banyan Tree motif, revered as the Tress of Life and often depicted in shadow puppetry known as the Wayang Kulit.
It also features the leatherback sea turtle and starfish, reflecting Terengganu’s rich coastal landscape and maritime heritage, while the traditional spinning top pays tribute to a cherished pastime of earlier generations. Completing the narrative is Musang King durian, first discovered in Gua Musang, Kelantan, and now widely cultivated in Pahang, as an iconic fruit beloved across Malaysia, symbolizing both origin and evolution.
Northern Malaysia
A tribute to the Northern states of Kedah, Penang, Perak, and Perlis, this design features elements that reflect the region’s cultural identity and landscape.
Symbolising the region’s deep agricultural roots, Perlis and Kedah are represented through their expansive rice paddy plains, with Perlis also known for its prized Harum Manis mango. Perak is expressed through the Labu Sayong, a traditional Malay water pitcher made of earthenware. Penang is highlighted by its iconic first bridge and traditional Peranakan confectioneries such as kuih lapis and onde-onde, as well as the use of bunga kantan, or torch ginger flower, in the state’s famous asam laksa dish.
Together, these elements highlight the Northern region’s rich traditions and enduring heritage.
Central Malaysia
Showcasing elements that reflect the capital city, Kuala Lumpur, and the central state, Selangor, this motif brings together symbols that define the heart of Malaysia’s central region.
The hibiscus, as the national flower, anchors the design, accompanied by the traditional wau kite reflecting rich cultural heritage. The Malayan tiger’s paw signifies strength and national pride, while the iconic Twin Towers stand prominently, representing Kuala Lumpur’s modern identity and global presence. The dome of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building futher reflects its historical and architectural legacy.
Southern Malaysia
This motif draws from the cultural heritage of Johor, Malacca, and Negeri Sembilan, bringing together symbols that reflect each state’s identity.
Malacca is represented through its traditional Peranakan woven basket, its official state flower, the Bunga Kesidang, and Sang Kancil from classic fables. Johor is expressed through its performing arts, such as kompang, a traditional hand drum, its folklore dance, the kuda kepang and the pineapple as an agricultural symbol and the country’s foremost producer. Negeri Sembilan is honoured by the iconic Minangkabau house, with its curved rooflines representing its Adat Perpatih tradition.
Together, these elements highlight the Southern region’s diverse cultural expressions and enduring heritage.
East Malaysia
Highlighting the Bornean states of Sabah and Sarawak, this design reflects the region’s natural landmarks and rich indigenous heritage.
Symbolising strength and grandeur as Malaysia’s highest peak, Mount Kinabalu stands tall alongside the Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower and the Rhinoceros Hornbill, Malaysia’s national bird. The design also includes the fern motif often used by the Sarawakian Dayak Iban tribe, as well as the Murut Pinunguh Langsat motif, reflecting the cultural identity of one of Sabah’s indigenous communities, the Murut ethnic group.
Together, these elements present a cohesive representation of East Malaysia’s cultural and natural legacy.
