WHAT IS GARNET?

Garnet isn’t just one gem—it’s a group of several minerals. Although Garnet is often associated with the colour red, this unique stone comes in a variety of species and colours, from deep purples to vibrant greens. In fact, some Garnet species have colours reminiscent of bright, juicy fruits! 

The name "Garnet" comes from the Latin word granatus, meaning seeds, likely referring to the pomegranate. The gem's shape and vivid red colour are thought to resemble the seeds of this fruit. One striking variety of Garnet is Spessartite, which shines in an intense orange hue, often called "Mandarin" Garnet. On the other hand, Tsavorite—a vibrant green variety—gets its name from the Tsavo National Park in Kenya, where it was first discovered. Garnet also comes in shades of orange, yellow, brown, and purple, making it a versatile gemstone for both men’s and women’s fine jewellery. 

GARNET CARE AND CLEANING

On the Mohs scale of hardness, Garnet ranges between 6.5 and 7.5, meaning it can be scratched by harder gemstones like rubies (9), sapphires (9), and diamonds (10), and can scratch softer stones such as opals and pearls. To protect your Garnet, it’s best to store it separately in its own box. For cleaning, a simple at-home method is to gently brush it with warm, soapy water and a soft brush.
