Sapphire, a gemstone second only to diamond on the Mohs scale with a hardness of 9, is September's birthstone. Although the term sapphire is actually derived from the Greek word ‘sappheiros’ meaning blue, this gemstone comes in a variety of colours including pink, yellow, orange, peach and violet. Sapphire is often the perfect choice for an engagement or wedding ring not only because of its durability, but also because of what it symbolises - sincerity, truth, faithfulness and nobility.
